Trying out the new Mindstream theme from StudioPress. Looks ideal for a personal blog – I particularly like the post formats.
Bill’s
We decided to go out for breakfast this morning, as my partner had wanted to treat me since last Sunday’s half marathon achievement. I had recently read a review of Bill’s in Green Street on The Cambridge Breakfast Review, and wanted to try it for myself. Today seemed like as good an opportunity as any!
I had no idea how busy it would be, so decided to reserve a table the night before for 10:30. I had been up since 05:30, so was famished (having resisted the temptation of a snack before leaving for town). It was fairly busy when we arrived, but I’m not sure a reservation was needed. Still, better to be safe than sorry – especially when high expectations are involved!
We were greeted by a friendly staff member who showed us to a wooden table for two at the back of the cafe (which went on and on once inside). We took off our coats and sat down, spending some time taking in the vast array of products for sale that lined the walls. Very colourful and inviting.

A waiter soon took our order – we decided on a pot of (English breakfast) tea for two, and both went for the Bill’s vegetarian breakfast (£7.95) with optional baked beans (£1) and bubble & squeak (£1.50). Our mouths were watering already as we watched various breakfast platters arrive at nearby tables.
The waiter delivered a jug of water with two glasses that we had asked for, and before long another friendly face arrived with a big blue teapot and teacups. It seems they had ran out of tea spoons so we were asked to use the desert spoons in the cutlery holder on our table, which was fine.
Looking around we noticed all sorts of jams, biscuits, chutneys, teas and oils for sale as well as a number of hardware items such as watering cans and colourful string bags! This place was really buzzing with atmosphere and seemed very casual and relaxed at the same time.
Finally what we had been waiting all morning for arrived, and we were not disappointed! Presentation was excellent – and the flavours were incredible. Poached eggs, hummus, mushrooms, guacamole, sweet chilli sauce, toast, baked beans and bubble & squeak (we later realised that there should have been tomatoes, which were sadly missing). A sprig of basil on top released even more flavour with what I can honestly describe as one of the best cooked breakfasts I’ve ever had!
The portion was deceptive and did not appear large at first. We both hit a point towards the end of clearing our plates where we felt very full indeed.
So with clean plates in front of us we enjoyed a second cup of tea before paying our bill and leaving. No less than 5 members of staff cheerily said goodbye and thanks as we did so – a nice touch.
Final thoughts then?
Yes, it’s a little expensive. No, it’s not the bad-boy fry-up experience some (guys?) will crave. But it’s most definately an experience we plan to repeat in the future. It’s one of those places you visit to treat yourself every once in a while – and won’t be disappointed.
Highly recommended.
